Going out to Angel Island or Alcatraz for the day? Planning an all-day walk-around of Fisherman’s Wharf and the Embarcadero? Pick up a picnic in the gourmet wonderland that is the Ferry Building. Here’s how:
Start at Acme Bread Company, the legendary all-organic bakery begun in Berkeley. The classic baguettes will transport you as close to Paris as it’s possible to get from the West Coast of the United States. For a fancier San Francisco experience, grab a slab of olive rosemary bread. Be sure to bring cash—Acme doesn’t accept credit cards.

The TWP take: Yum!!! The food sold at the Ferry Building is high-end and delicious. Lots of organics, local products, and expensive treats. Expect to pay a premium for picnic fixings for sure, but if you’re into gourmet food at all you’ll love your meal.
The Ferry Building has wide, easy-to-navigate hallways that can be a medium to long walk depending on how I’m feeling and how much shopping I want to do. There’s not much seating inside, but plenty of benches outdoors. Visitors can use public restrooms out back on the Bay side of the building. Do be aware that the Farmer’s Markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays turn the Plaza on the City side of the building into a seething zoo of humanity–this goes double on Saturdays in summertime!
Now see the no credit cards is a need to know kind of thing. I normally roam with small cash but heavily depend on my atm/credit card.
This is a fabulous idea I’ll have to try it out some time. I have yet to go to the ferry building. So sad considering how often I venture into the city.
